Candle Burning & SafetyCandles don’t cause fires, people cause fires!! Burn your candles safely & use common sense. Warning labels for candles don't always tell you WHY you should do things .... we aim to educate you as well as help your candles to burn longer and brighter!!! Please read and inwardly digest!!!DO NOT BLOW OUT CANDLES! WHY? For sooooo many reasons!! Liquid wax is hot. If you blow the flame out, hot liquid wax could splutter onto your face and burn you. When you blow a candle out, you are left with a red ember that will smoke as it eats up the rest of the wick and make it difficult to relight next time. The best way to extinguish a candle is to take a non flammable object (pair of scissors etc) and gently push the wick into the melt pool. Use the scissors to then lift out the wick and re-centre. Extinguishing this way prevents sooting, stops the wick from being off-centre and also coats the wick in wax so it will re-light beautifully next time around. KEEP WICKS TRIMMED! WHY? For starters they will burn longer and save you money!! Trimming wicks keeps the flame low which helps prevent sooting and makes the candle burn longer. Your candles will burn up to 25% longer by trimming the wick every couple of hours, and also smoke significantly less. MAKE SURE THE WICK IS CENTRED! WHY? A lit wick that gets too close to the sides of a pillar will cause liquid wax to leak out. After the candle is put out, moving the wick to center will insure the candle burns evenly the next time its light. Once the wax hardens it’s too late! With votives in containers, you risk the glass breaking from the excess heat. Keep it centred while burning and just after extinguishing. KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN AND PETS! WHY? It sounds so obvious, but children and pets are curious and may be intrigued by the flickering light. Make sure children understand it is hot and keep candles far out of reach. Pets can knock the candle over or brush by the flame, singe their tail and catch fire to themselves or the curtains, the sofa ... oh well, you get the idea!! KEEP AWAY FROM DRAFTS & CEILING FANS! WHY? Flames that flicker can cause sooting. Breezes or drafts can cause the flame to burn inconsistently. This in turn means the flame isn't as hot as it needs to be in order to burn off all of the carbon... it will therefore produce soot. You need a nice steady even flame. NEVER LEAVE BURNING CANDLES UNATTENDED! WHY? Would you leave the house with the grill or the iron on? It's the same thing! You don't need to be totally obsessive and extinguish it every time you go to the bathroom or make a cup of coffee, but if you are leaving the room for extended periods then be safe and put the flame out. DO NOT BURN DIRECTLY ON FURNITURE OR TOP OF THE TV! WHY? Remember a glass holder will get hot and could mark your furniture, so put it on a coaster. The top of the TV will be warm and will cause holders to heat up faster or pillars to warp. KEEP CANDLES AWAY FROM ANYTHING FLAMMABLE! WHY? Another one that sounds so obvious! If the window was open (which it shouldn’t be if the candle is nearby) the breeze could blow your curtain right into the flame! Also, think about what is above the candle (shelves, cupboards etc) as heat rises. IF THE CANDLE IS SMOKING, TRIM THE WICK! WHY? Because it will cause soot!! No one wants soot on their walls or ceiling. Candles left for extended periods always need the wick trimmed. The smoking or sooting is most likely caused from the flame being too large, trim that wick, often PLEASE. BURN ON A STURDY, STABLE AND FLAT SURFACE WHY? A candle burning in the middle of a high traffic area of the house is not a good place for a flame as it will continually flicker and smoke. It could also get bumped into. Candles will burn down evenly if used on level surfaces away from drafts. LET THE HOT LIQUID WAX COOL DOWN BEFORE MOVING THE CANDLE! WHY? Liquid wax is very hot and messy. Votive glasses will also be hot. Don’t make the mistake of moving it and then your hand gets hot and bam! the candle goes down. You could burn yourself. |
